2019 Interior Design Trends to Watch Out For

A well designed space, regardless of style, stands the test of time. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take your cue from what’s timely.

While décor isn’t as fickle as fashion, new trends do surface every year or so. To find out what’s hot for 2019, we tapped top design pros for their best predictions. These ideas just might inspire you to make some improvements.

Sustainability (Less is More)

Sustainable interior design creates interior spaces using design principles such as functionality, accessibility, and aesthetics and expands the focus to include environmental considerations. For example, sustainable design projects are influenced by such factors as planning efficient use of space, choosing materials with low environmental impacts, and reducing energy consumption, pollution, and waste. Sustainable interior designers are committed to finding ways to balance aesthetics and functionality with choices that reduce the environmental impact of their designs.

Society is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of environmentally responsible building and interior design. As a result, more and more clients seek to incorporate sustainability principles in their interiors. By following these sustainable interior design principles, designers reduce the negative environmental impact of our society and build a better, more sustainable future: design for energy efficiency, design for low environmental impact, and design for waste reduction, design for longevity and flexibility and design for healthy environments.

Biophilia

According to Angie Lee of FXCollaborative, biophilia will be a big trend this year. “Biophilia is a design driver that engages the end user by connecting them to primal instincts about the relationship between humans and nature. When done properly, we are calmed by the sight of greenery in the form of live plants and living walls, the sight, and sound of water, access to views of natural settings, and tactile organic materials such as wood and stone.”

She added, “Designing authentic biophilic settings that don’t trip our intuitive sensors with false substitutes is important especially in today’s technology-fueled world, where we increasingly crave a connection back to human-centric and natural elements.”

Biophilic design can reduce stress, enhance creativity and clarity of thought, improve our well-being and expedite healing; as the world population continues to urbanize, these qualities are ever more important. Biophilia is not just about plants, the obvious application of biophilia for indoor environments is the addition of plant life, but that’s just the beginning. Human response to natural processes goes much farther. Maximizing natural light benefits people as well as energy bills, but biophilic interventions incorporate natural lighting from diffusion to temporal changes. Also, our minds and bodies appreciate the presence of water. Interventions that add the presence of water to spaces have several health benefits, among them lowered blood pressure, lowered heart rate, and memory restoration.

Multifunctional Furniture

Multifunctional interior design in contemporary styles are one of the latest trends. It influences lighting fixture and furniture design ideas and bring changes into home decorating in contemporary styles. Smaller homes and apartments call for multifunctional, stylish and comfortable modern interiors. This means less space should provide functional rooms which looks attractive and inviting.

Multifunctional interior design brings many innovative and interesting solutions that you can incorporate into your small living spaces, improving their functionality and appeal. Built-in furniture or contemporary designs for space saving, raising beds and loft beds, transforming furniture pieces and modern furniture with hidden storage are modern interior design trends, which offer smart and attractive ideas for decorating small apartments and homes in traditional and contemporary styles. Smart furniture design ideas, transformer furniture, space saving furniture design ideas, like folding, stackable and convertible items, are great for improving functionality and maximizing small spaces.

Handcrafted Authenticity

“A return to handcrafted authenticity, especially when it comes to furniture and decorative arts versus buying mass produced pieces will be much more popular in 2019.” –Andria Mitsakos, Oil Nut Bay

Anything that looks like the work of a detail-obsessed artisan will be right at home in 2019. Whether it’s a handcrafted headboard, a standout chair, or a custom metal-framed mirror, a few artisanal elements will keep things interesting without the pressure to commit an entire space to the look, says designer John Linden of MirrorCoop in Los Angeles.

When a piece of furniture or home decor is individually handcrafted by an Artisan, rather than mass produced through a factory chain, that instantly adds a distinct and personal touch to any interior space. Handmade products require time, artistry and skills which, once combined, give life to pieces greatly enriched by the care and personal attention invested by the artisan behind their creation.

Artisanal crafts infuse the space with a true sense of artistry. The work of a creative mind, and the materialization of its vision into functional art, complements the space with unmistakable authenticity and originality.

Innovative Use of Metal

“Metals will be used in more interesting ways and will be more popular than ever, but no more rose gold. Whether it’s gold, brass or blackened metals, they will be used in a lacy or massed ways. They will definitely be more interesting and designed in a more sculptural-based manner than in the past. There’s a strong push towards art as function.” — Joy Moyler, interior designer.

For years, metal has been used for roofing and exterior siding. But new materials, applications and attitudes have moved it inside buildings producing creative, intricate interior designs. Metal’s versatility opens it up to virtually limitless applications, while delivering durability and longevity that surpasses many other interior materials. It blends function, form, beauty and style.

Metal has become a creative interior component for settings with high-traffic areas and multiple levels, in addition to its use an accent material. Metal panels are a sustainable and versatile choice in comparison to traditional materials. There is a wide range of available colors, finishes and profiles that give interior designers unlimited possibilities to meet their needs. Metal panels have a warm, strong, interesting appearance. With the correct use of color, forming, stamping and texture, metal panels provide a look that no other material can achieve.
